Nigeria Has 36 States, With Close to 250 Tribes 🌏

Let's explore which tribe dominates in a particular state.

(1). North West Zone:

The North West region is mainly dominated by the Hausa-Fulani tribe. States in this zone include:

- Kano: Predominantly Hausa-Fulani.

- Katsina: Mainly Hausa-Fulani.

- Sokoto: Hausa-Fulani (also considered the spiritual home of the Fulani people).

- Zamfara: Hausa-Fulani.

- Kebbi: Predominantly Hausa-Fulani, with a mix of Gwari and others.

- Jigawa: Mainly Hausa-Fulani.

- Kaduna: Hausa-Fulani dominate, but there are also significant populations of Gwari, Southern Kaduna tribes (e.g., Bajju, Atyap).

(2). North East Zone:

This region has a mix of ethnic groups, but it is still largely dominated by the Kanuri and Fulani tribes.

- Borno: Mainly Kanuri.

- Yobe: Predominantly Kanuri, with some Fulani.

- Adamawa: Fulani, Bachama, and others.

- Bauchi: Predominantly Fulani, with Hausa and others.

- Gombe: Mainly Fulani and Tangale.

- Taraba: Jukun, Fulani, and Tiv.

(3). North Central Zone:

Known as the "Middle Belt," this zone is highly diverse, with various ethnic groups.

- Benue: Predominantly Tiv, Idoma.

- Kogi: Igala, Ebira, Okun (Yoruba subgroup) 

- Kwara: Mainly Yoruba, with Nupe and Bariba minorities.

- Niger: Predominantly Nupe, Hausa, and Gwari.

- Nasarawa: Gwari, Eggon, and Hausa-Fulani.

- Plateau: Mainly Berom, Anaguta, Afizere, and other smaller ethnic groups.

- FCT (Abuja): Mixed, with significant representation of almost all Nigerian tribes.

(4). South West Zone:

The South West is largely dominated by the Yoruba tribe, which is the main ethnic group in all its states.

- Lagos: Mainly Yoruba, but also a melting pot of all Nigerian tribes.

- Ogun: Predominantly Yoruba (Egba, Ijebu, and Egbado subgroups)

- Oyo: Mainly Yoruba (Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Oyo subgroups).

- Osun: Predominantly Yoruba (Ife, Ijesha subgroups).

- Ondo: Mainly Yoruba (Akure, Ilaje, Ondo subgroups).

- Ekiti: Predominantly Yoruba (Ekiti subgroup).

(5). South East Zone:

This region is dominated by the Igbo tribe, which is the main ethnic group across all its states.

- Abia: Predominantly Igbo

- Anambra: Mainly Igbo

- Ebonyi: Mainly Igbo

- Enugu: Predominantly Igbo

- Imo: Mainly Igbo

(6). South South Zone:

The South South region is ethnically diverse, with many ethnic groups, including the Ijaw, Ibibio, Efik, Urhobo, Itsekiri, and more.

- Akwa Ibom: Predominantly Ibibio, Annang, and Oron

- Cross River: Mainly Efik, Ejagham, and other smaller tribes

- Rivers: Ijaw, Ikwerre-(Igbo), Ogoni, and others

- Bayelsa: Predominantly Ijaw

- Delta: Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Isoko

- Edo: Mainly Edo (Bini), Esan, Afemai
