History and Chronicles of the Present and Past Olu of Ilaro Yewa, Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Ogun State: President, Yewa Traditional Council

There are Four Ruling Chieftaincy Houses in Ilaro Yewa

Ogun State, Nigeria namely

(1). Asade Agunloye Chieftaincy Ruling House

(2). Olukogbon  Chieftaincy Ruling house

(3). Adeika Chieftaincy Ruling House

(4). Tella Agbenuaran Chieftaincy Ruling House

Brief Introduction on the founding of Ilaro Yewa, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Ilaro was established by a Oyo Prince by the name Aro from the Oyo Empire who was one of the sons of Oba Abiodun, the Alaafin of Oyo, who reigns was between 1770 – 1789.

Ilaro was settled and established by Prince Aro, one of the sons of Oba Abiodun, Alaafin of Oyo in the 17th Century.

The name Ilaro is derived from the founder name Aro, it was previously called Ilu Aro and then over the centuries shortened to Ilaro from the word  Ilu Aro.

The Past Olu of Ilaro are as followed based on Documented Historical records

Oba Obadu : The Olu of Ilaro

Oba Oromba : The Olu of Ilaro

Oba Basaku : The Olu of Ilaro

Oba Olubisi  : The Olu of Ilaro

Oba Badagunro : The Olu of Ilaro

Oba Edu : The Olu of Ilaro

It is important to point out that Oba Edu fled Ilaro during a Civil War to Isale Eko in present day, Lagos Island, Lagos State, Nigeria and was received by Oba Akinsemoyin, Oba of Lagos and Eleko of Eko in 1720.

In Yoruba Culture, there cannot be Two Obas in a Town and Oba Edu, the Deposed Olu of Ilaro was offered the Onisemo Title as Onisemo of Lagos under the then Oba of Lagos and Eleko of Eko,  Oba Akinsemoyin in 1720.

Note that Oba Akinsemoyin was Oba of Lagos and Eleko Of Eko reigns between 1704 – 1749.

The Onisemo Chieftaincy Family of Isale Eko, Lagos Island, Lagos State, Nigeria are all descendants of Oba Edu, the Olu of Ilaro and all Yewa Dieties such as ORONNA : Ancient warlord of Ilaro Yewa, GELEDE Masquerades, EFE Masquerades,  IYA ALA, YEWAJOBI are revered till date in the Onisemo Chieftaincy Family of Isale Eko, Lagos Island, Lagos State.

Oba Balagbadi : The Olu of Ilaro

Oba Asade Agunloye I : The Olu of Ilaro.

1812- 1832.

At this junction, it is germane and important to point out in ancient Ilaro culture, the Olu of Ilaro reign in Ilaro Metropolis for a period of Three (3) years and after a period of Three years, the Olu of Ilaro returns back to what was known as Oyo Ile which was the Oyo Empire to reigns as a vassal Oba with the Alaafin of Oyo and the Adele of Ilaro acts on behalf of the Olu of Ilaro who is now based permanently in the Oyo empire.

All Olu of Ilaro from inception are Oyo Obas.

Oba Asade Agunloye I : The Olu of Ilaro  who reigns from 1812- 1832 is the first Olu of Ilaro who abolished this culture and reigns absolutely as Olu of Ilaro.

Oba Ojo Kosiwon : The Olu of Ilaro (1833- 1856).

Oba Tella Agbenuaran : The Olu of Ilaro (1857-1879).

Oba Olugbenle Agunloye II : The Olu of Ilaro (1882-1903).

Oba Adewale Tella Agbenuaran II : The Olu of Ilaro (1904-1912).

Oba Olusoji Agunloye III : The Olu of Ilaro (1913-1937).

Oba Adekunle Ojobo Olukogbonii, Arolagbade : The Olu of Ilaro (July 25th-September 1, 1966)’

Oba Samuel Idowu Oduntan Adeika II : The Olu of Ilaro (July 29th 1967 – January 14th 1975).

Oba Dr, Samuel Adeniran Adekambi Tella Agbenuaran III (9th October 1976 - 19th February 2008).

The Olu of Ilaro Yewa and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, President of the Yewa Traditional Council.

In the year 1995, the Yorubas in the Ogun West Senatorial District changed their Identity  from Egbado to Yewa as the Identity Egbado is misnomer.

The Word, YEWA is derived from the River Yewa which runs across Ogun West Senatorial District, Ogun State to Lagos State through the Badagry Creek to the Atlantic Ocean.

Importantly River Yewa is the Yoruba’s goddess for Fertility and Motherhood.

Oba  Dr Samuel Adeniran Adekambi Tella Agbenuaran III who reigns between 9th October 1976 - 19th February 2008 the First Paramount Ruler of Yewaland and President of the Yewa Traditional Council which consists of all Obas in Yewa South Local Government Area, Yewa North Government Area, Ipokia Local Government Area, Imeko Afon Local Government Area and Ado Odo, Agbara etc in Ado Odo/Otta Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria.

The Present Olu of Ilaro Yewa and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland is His Imperial Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle MFR who is the also President of the Yewa Traditional Council who was crowned on 14th April 2012.
