Chief Jacob Egharevba was a prominent Nigerian historian, writer, and curator known for his extensive contributions to documenting and preserving the history and culture of Benin Kingdom.
Early Life:
Born in Idanre, Ondo State, Egharevba had a lineage connected to significant figures in Benin, such as his father's relation to Ohenmwen, Iyase of Benin, and his mother being the granddaughter of Ogie Ezomo I. His upbringing likely influenced his deep interest in Benin history and traditions.
Career and Contributions:
In 1921, Egharevba began his literary journey by writing the draft of his first book, "Ekhere vb Itan Edo" (later known as "A Short History of Benin"). Published around 1933 by CMS Press, this book gained widespread success. He continued publishing in the Edo language initially but transitioned to English in 1934 due to its wider reach.
His second notable work, "Benin Law and Custom," published in 1934, further solidified his reputation as an authority on Benin history, laws, and customs. His expertise was sought in Native Court cases where he served as a consultant on Benin traditions. Beyond books, he contributed articles to newspapers and engaged in petitions to the colonial government, showcasing his commitment to advocacy and education.
In 1934, he established a printing press in Benin, emphasizing his dedication to spreading knowledge and preserving cultural heritage through publications.
Egharevba's career reached new heights when he was appointed as the curator of the Benin Museum in 1946. This role allowed him to combine his passion for history with practical preservation efforts. Despite his duties as a curator, he continued writing prolifically, producing a total of 28 books by 1968.
In 1973, a significant milestone was achieved with the publication of 13 of his works in two volumes, further cementing his legacy as a preeminent historian and scholar of Benin history and culture.
