One of the legacies of Bishop Samuel Àjàyí Crowther is the reduction of the size of the Yoruba words.
He did this by modifying the Roman alphabet and also by giving the Roman rather than the English sound to some of the letters.
Can you guess the names of these towns:
Ejahyay?
Awyaw?
Ebaddan?
Ejayboo?
Ekkaw?
Ogbomishaw?
Following Crowther's intervention, the above towns are now spelt as follow:
Ìjàyè
Ọ̀yọ́
Ìbàdàn
Ìjèbú
Èkó
Ògbómọ̀shọ́
One of the reasons for this was to reduce the size of the Bible!
