Some years back, I had a cousin that had learned a trade. When he finished, we discussed. I wanted to support him to buy equipments. He preferred that I gave him money for his “freedom” party. He had the party. He never did get the funds for his equipment. He had a very rough start.
My people love parties. We love the good life. Our parties reflect our character and thinking. There are some things that we have convinced ourselves that we must do. No matter how broke we are. This thinking is deepening poverty.
I saw a video of the new servings at parties. The Garri and sugar combo with all things. Another layer of cost. The sad thing is that that it will now be replicated across board. It will be the “standard” thing to do.
We love to purchase expensive clothes just for that day. Some might not have paid school fees, house rent and other bills, but will still borrow to impress. To be talked about for the party they hosted. The talk will last for max a few months. But poverty might last for years.
We need to reset our value system. We must start to teach people about wealth. Wealth not money. We must disabuse minds of youngsters that live to impress or oppress. That no money is made from rituals. That it is a scam. That money well earned and managed can provide a better future.
We must stop our show off. It is killing our society. We accuse others tribes of taking over our lands. But we sell it to them to meet short term needs. Our wiring is faulty.
Our children are now happy to ride Okada than learn a trade. We have raised short term thinkers.
How do we get back to the basics? How do we start the process of reorientation?
E je ka ronu o. Ola is not looking good for us!
