DRAMA AS SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBER'S SPILLS BEANS... SAYS BANK STAFF ARRANGED OPERATION

A staff of an Abeokuta-based microfinance bank in Ogun State, who organized a pseudo robbery of himself, with the aim of converting his employer's N3m, has been arrested.

The suspect, Olagoke Dare of Abestone Microfinance Bank, was detailed, alongside a female staff, Mary Agbejo, to make a withdrawal of the money from a commercial Bank at Oke-Ilewo in the Abeokuta metropolis.

Apparently having a fore-knowledge of the official assignment, the suspect contacted one Idowu Tunde, whom he brief and made an arrangement on how to make the operation look real.

He was said to have provided his accomplice, Idowu, with a toy gun and also ensured that the car provided to convey the money from the commercial bank to Abestone Microfinance Bank was unlocked.

Consequently, as the two microfinance bank staff went into the banking hall for the transaction, the 'armed robber' effortlessly opened the car rear door and hid himself.

On completion of the transaction, after which the two microfinance bank staff boarded the vehicle, with the female staff being in the custody of the money, at a point, the 'armed robber' suddenly raised his head up and pointed the gun at her, with the aim of collecting the money.

But, according the state Police spokesman (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a press release, the lady observed that the gun was a mere toy, and wrested it with the holder, before raising an alarm that attracted passers-by, who ran after the vehicle, caught up with them and held down the purported armed robber.

A distress call was then made to the police.

The release stated that, "Upon the distress call, the DPO Ibara Division, SP Segun Ajao, quickly mobilized his men and moved to the scene, where one Idowu Tunde was arrested, with the assistance of members of the public", adding that Idowu, on interrogation, led the cat out of the bag, as he reeled out some shocking revelations on how the male bank staff orchestrated the pseudo robbery.

He was said to have revealed how the male bank staff, Dare, "informed him that his employers would be sending him and one other person to withdraw the sum of N3million, and that Idowu should come and rob them of the money", adding that, he also provided him with a toy gun to carry out the operation.

"He confessed further that, while Dare and his other colleague went into the bank, he, Idowu, hid himself in their car, that was deliberately left opened by Dare, as was their plan. While they got into the car, Idowu explained that, he suddenly emerged from the back seat and pointed the gun at the lady, who was holding the money. But the lady noticed that the gun did not look original, consequent upon which she dragged the gun with him and raised an alarm, a development that attracted people who pursued them and called the police", the PPRO said.

"Meanwhile, the acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Abiodun Alamutu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the two suspects to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation, while also advising companies to always endeavour to  do background checks on their staff before employing them", the statement concluded.
