YAKUBU GOWON

On 29th July, 1975, Nigeria's head of state, Yakubu Gowon, was peacefully overthrown in a coup while he was attending an OAU summit in, Kampala, Uganda.

Colonel Joe Nanven Garba led the coup because of frustration with Gowon's handling of the economy, widespread corruption, and delays in returning to civilian rule.

Brigadier Murtala Mohammed took over as the new leader and quickly started reforms to address corruption and improve governance.

Gowon accepted his removal and went into exile in the UK.
