Deji of Akure is an obaship title that started with Oba Arakale (1768-1818)

Oba Arakale's mother was an Ijesha princess known as Owawejokun, daughter of Oba Atakumasa (Owa of Ijesha Land).

From what gathered, when Oba Arakale was born, his grandfather, Owa presented him a crown as a gift. The gesture was elaborated to the extent that the people nicknamed the child 'Owa faa ade ji'  meaning Owa gifted him a crown.

Owafadeji(contraction of 'Owa faa ade ji')

officially became a title when Arakale mounted the throne of Akure. Arakale's prominence as an oba ensured that Owafadeji became the obaship title of Akure. Over time, Owafadeji was shortened to Deji- the name of the obaship stool of Akure till date.

However, the title Ajapade given to Asodeboyede (the Ife prince that founded Akure) remains a significant royal family line as regards the Obaship stool of Akure.

Oba Arakale had two sons, Oba Osupa and Oba Ojijigogun, now established ruling houses. The main royal family of the Osupa house is Odundun, whose progenitor is Oba Odundun, one of Osupa's sons and the ancestor of the current Deji of Akure, Oba Odundun II.  The three royal families of the Ojijigogun ruling house are Arosoye, Adesida, and Ifaturoti.

History remembers Oba Arakale not just as a king, but also as a war strategist that secured Akure Kingdom from external aggressors and as well conquered many kingdoms including Benin Kingdom.
