BENIN HERO

General Ologbosere (seated in the picture, flanked by African colonial regiments) alongside Oviawe, Ebohon (not in the picture above) and others, led a two year gurerilla war of resistance against the British in Benin destroying the British outpost, flags after the invasion. He was captured by the people who got frusterated with the British tactics of destroying houses and food crops of any town and villages that harboured him. Colonial Nigeria 1897-1934.

Ologbosere was hanged by the British in 1899. The respected chief of Benin Kingdom fought a guerrilla war for 2 years against the British occupation army . To the British, he was treacherous and barbaric, but to many Benin people he was symbol of resistance against the invaders. Photographed just before execution.

These are the type of heroes we ought to be studying in our schools .
