ÀROKÒ (Symbol Communication)

Òwó Èyo atì Ewe

When someone sends Three Cowry shells in a leaf it request the recipient to pay the money owning the sender. Otherwise,  there will be conflict or fight over debt owning.  __________________________

Àrokò is a traditional non-verbal mode of communication among the Yoruba with carefully prepared symbols which communicates thoughts and actions, usually sent through a messenger from one person to the other for the purpose of conveying a message to be decoded by the receiver. It is used for warning, secrecy, professing love, conflict, punishment, impending war, etc. Àrokò gives meanings to object through social interaction. A social construction of reality because it's a by-product of social experiences and communication with others.

This project attempts a descriptive analysis of the symbol communication system known as Àrokò among the Yorùbá.

My interest lies in the efficacy of the system, how they convey their meanings. It is complex, dynamic and culture bound.
