Oye-Ekiti is an ancient town in Ekiti, Nigeria. The town's history began with its founder, Oloyemoyin.
Oloyemoyin was born in Ile-Ife during a severe harmattan (a harsh weather season). To protect him, he was kept in a dark room with a goddess named Obalatan and fed honey instead of breast milk. This unusual start to life earned him his name, meaning "one who brings harmattan and eats honey."
As Oloyemoyin grew up, he became famous for being a good person. He was known for lighting lamps to keep the harmattan away.
Oloyemoyin left Ile-Ife with his brother and many others. They traveled with weapons and priests but were resisted by the people already living in the area. After fighting, they settled in a new place called Oye-Ekiti.
Today, Oye-Ekiti still remembers its founder, Oloyemoyin, and the harmattan that shaped his life.
