Meet Adegoke Adelabu (1915-1958), a Nigerian politician, writer, and orator. People called him "Penkelemesi" (Peculiar Mess) or "Lion of the West."
Adelabu was born in Oke-Oluokun, Ibadan. He attended CMS Schools in Kudeti and Mapo, and then went to the famous Government College Ibadan (GCI). He was an excellent student, and his academic record has yet to be beaten.
Adelabu also studied at Yaba Higher College, where he finished quickly. After graduating, he worked at UAC and became the first African manager.
He was a brave and influential politician who co-founded the Ibadan Peoples Party with Adisa Akinloye in 1951. Later, he joined the NCNC party and became the Leader of the Opposition in the Western House of Assembly.
Tragically, Adelabu died in a car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Road on March 25, 1958. He was just 42 years old and left behind 12 wives and 15 children.
