THE PORT OF LAMU

The Port of Lamu marked another milestone in its growing profile as a regional transshipment hub after the container vessel MV HongKong Bridge made her maiden call early morning. The vessel, carrying 371 TEUs of transshipment cargo destined for Dar es Salaam, docked at 0600 hrs. after a seven-day voyage from Jebel Ali, UAE.

The ship with a Length Overall of  265 meters  and 34 meters in breadth, is one of the largest vessels to call at the Port since its inauguration. The arrival underscores the port’s increasing strategic importance in East Africa’s maritime logistics.

Lamu Port General Manager Eng. Vincent Sidai described the development as a “good sign” for business, expressing optimism about the port’s growing role in handling transshipment cargo.

“The arrival of MV HongKong Bridge demonstrates that global shipping lines are recognizing Lamu as a viable alternative for regional trade,” Sidai told reporters. “We expect more vessels to follow as we continue positioning Lamu as a key gateway for East and Central Africa.”

Lamu Port, part of Kenya’s LAPSSET Corridor project, was designed to complement Mombasa Port and provide a strategic link to Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the wider East African market. While it has faced slow initial uptake, recent months have seen increased activity, with more shipping lines exploring Lamu as a transshipment hub.

As global shipping patterns evolve, Lamu Port’s ability to attract transshipment cargo will be critical in determining its long-term success. For now, the arrival of MV HongKong Bridge is a clear signal that the port is gaining traction in the regional trade network.
