January 17, 1966, is an important day in Nigerian history. On this day, Lt. Col. Emeka Ojukwu was made Military Governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria. He held this position from 1966 to 1967.

Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi, who had become the head of state after a military coup, made this appointment. Ojukwu's leadership was very important in shaping the region's future.

Later, he became the leader of the Republic of Biafra from 1967 to 1970. This was during the Nigerian Civil War. Ojukwu was born on November 4, 1933, in Zungeru, which is now in Niger State. He came from a prominent Igbo family.

Ojukwu studied at King's College in Lagos and at Oxford University. His legacy is complex and has many different parts. Some people see him as a hero who fought for the rights and survival of the Igbo people. Others see him as a key figure responsible for the devastating civil war.

Regardless, January 17, 1966, marks an important turning point in Ojukwu's career and Nigerian history.
