Julius Kambarage Nyerere: The Mwalimu of Tanzania (April 13,1922 – October 14, 1999)

Nyerere a Tanzanian  political theorist. He governed Tanganyika as prime minister from 1961 to 1962 and then as president from 1962 to 1964, after which he led its successor state, Tanzania, as President from 1964 to 1985. He was a founding member and chair of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) party, and of its successor, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, from 1954 to 1990. Ideologically an African nationalist and African socialist, he promoted a political philosophy known as Ujamaa.

Nyerere was a controversial figure. Across Africa he gained widespread respect as an anti-colonialist and in power received praise for ensuring that, unlike many of its neighbours, Tanzania remained stable and unified in the decades following independence.Nyerere firmly believed in egalitarianism and in creating a society of equals, referring to his desire for a "classless society".

In his view, the equality of ujamaa must come from the individual's commitment to a just society in which all talents and abilities were used to the full.He desired a society in which the interests of the individual and society were identical and thought this could be achieved because individuals ultimately wanted to promote the common good.

He is held in deep respect in Tanzania, where he is often referred to by the Swahili honorific Mwalimu ("teacher") and described as the "Father of the Nation". He is a great Pan-African who depicts the uniformity of African Continent. According to the historian W. O. Maloba, through his writing Nyerere became "one of the most respected contributors to the expanding literature on African Socialism".
