During his coronation, H.M. Olu Atuwatse-III made reference to the historic ๐ผ๐ณ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ of the Warri Kingdom of Itsekiri.
Please refer to the embedded video below for reference & details. From the Olu’s testimony:
The first was a beaded crown brought by Ginuwa from the Benin palace; the second was a Portuguese-style silver crown; and the third is a golden crown made in the same Portuguese style.
Please refer to the image below for the silver and golden crowns.Unfortunately, not much is known about the “actual”, primary, official crown — the beaded crown.
Fortunately for posterity however, all information is not lost on this crown.
Lieutenant John King, R.N. was at the Warri kingdom ๐ค๐ช๐ณ๐ค๐ข 1818.Lieut. John King, R.N. beheld this very crown and has got a little (but crucial) piece to share with posterity.
Lt. John King notes:"At Warri “the ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป of the sovereign is a sort of large cap in the ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ three feet high, covered with ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ and with a couple of ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐’ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐ฝ” (King)."
King, R. N. in H. L. Roth (1903), p. 27. n. 1.Notice how the description furnished by John King unmistakably matches the ๐ฌ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ฏ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ called ๐๐ฑรฉ-ล๐นรก.
Please compare the “๐๐ฑรฉ-ล๐นรก” crown ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐น๐ฒ below with Lieut. John King’s description of the Itsekiri crown.
Notice the striking resemblance.๐๐ฑรฉ-ล๐นรก crowns (i.e. ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ-๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐๐๐บ๐ฏ๐ผ๐น๐) are unique articles of ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ฏ๐ฎ ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐น๐๐.
They are renowned for their ๐๐น๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ด๐ถ๐ป from the sacred & primary Yoruba kingdom of ๐๐ณแบน̀.In Conclusion:
It now becomes clear that the “๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐๐ฎ๐น” crown of the Warri kingdom of Itsekiri was an ๐๐ฑรฉ-ล๐นรก crown.
It also becomes clear that the palace of the Bini once held at least one ๐๐ฑรฉ-ล๐นรก (of ๐๐ณแบน̀ origin) with which Ginuwa left Benin for Ode-Itsekiri.
