Okanran Meji is basically the Odu of Shango. It talks about retribution, vengeance and atonement. Okanran Meji explains the reason why Shango decided to stay with OLODUMARE in ORUN rather than live amongst mortals.

In the time of the Orisas, the animals could talk and communicate among themselves and humans, and whenever it was time for a sacrifice to be performed, Orunmila would go to the wild and ask all the animals if any of them was willing to make the journey to Orun for the sacrifice specifically, and one or more of the preferred animals or birds would willingly come forward to be used. When the time came for Shango to offer his annual sacrifice, he went to Orunmila to do the reading and Okanran Meji came up and asked Shango specifically for two rams. Meanwhile, the ram was grazing behind Orunmila's house and overheard the reading. He then went into the wild to inform the others that Shango is coming to ask for more animals than usual. He spread a lot of lies and poisoned the minds of all the other animals who then planned not to honor Orunmila's call whenever he comes around.

So when Orunmila came to ask for animals, none of them offered to come forward and undertake the sacrificial journey to Orun for Shango. Orunmila then asked the animals why they have all refused to go. The Lion answered Orunmila and said, "Why does the human not use their own kind for the sacrifice, and what is the benefit for the animals? Is it not enough that humans use us as food?" Orunmila replied to the Lion and asked him, "Were you there when OLODUMARE made me?” The Lion said “No!” Orunmila said, “I was there when Obatala molded you and I was there when OLODUMARE gave you life!” Orunmila then asked who put those thoughts in their head and they all pointed to the ram.

Orunmila went home and told Shango what happened and that Shango would have to sacrifice his self, as no animal was willing to go for him. So Shango took the journey angrily and went to Orun to live permanently but before he left he went to the wild and swore to the ram that his generation will forever be used as sacrifice for him and he will never accept any other animal except the ram.

The lightening and thunderstorm are still signs of Shango's anger in undertaking the journey by his self. It was after this that OLODUMARE took away the general voice and language of the animals so that they can only communicate and understand their own kind. Aboru Aboye nile Ifa!
