The Fearless Agikuyu Chieftess

Wangu Wa Makeri.

Wangu Wa Makeri was born in 1856 in a picturesque town called Murang'a in Central Kenya.

She became a headman in 1902 which was a position reserved only for men during the colonial times. Her duties included; collecting taxes, brokering peace in the community and communicating the rules of the colonizer to her people.

Her fall from grace happened when she decided to dance " Kibata", a dance that was deemed a men's only affair.

Her "dishonorable" dance became a subject of discussion amongst her people and in 1909, they forced her to resign!

She died either 1915 or 1936.
