THE AFRICAN AMISH - THE ZEZURU PPEOPLE

Much like the Amish Christian communities in the United States cut off from the modern amenities the Zezuru are a religious tribal people of the Shona people originally from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 one of the 3 branches of the Shona people consisting of Zezuru, Korekore and Karanga dialects. They have migrated into countries like South Africa 🇿🇦, Botswana 🇧🇼 and Kenya 🇰🇪.

The Zezuru are known for wearing white garments & mostly involved in the informal economy with their Men doing carpentry, metal work and other handicrafts with this skills passed on from one generation to the other at a young age & their women leave by selling fruits and vegetables in the streets. Due to their strict religious adherence they isolate themselves from the larger society and are allowed to only marry within their own community, and women are married off at a young age, school (education) is highly discouraged, women keep bald heads & should wear head scarfs.

The Zezuru have since been given citizenship in countries they immigrated to & have been in clash with national governments due to their lifestyle like in Botswana with regards to their child marriage, practice of polygamy and taking children out of school resulting on poor literacy rates among the community. The world is regarded as their church therefore any open space that can accommodate them is used and modern structures of church buildings are prohibited.
