๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐˜† ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฒ (Real Name: Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, born 22 September 1946) is a 77-year-old Nigerian jรนjรบ singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He is counted among Africa’s first pop musicians to become successful internationally.

Best described as the king of Juju music and a major inspiration to younger Nigerian artists such as Lagbaja, ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐˜† ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฒ (KSA) has come a long way in the Nigerian music industry and beyond. The iconic singer holds many impressive records, titles, and awards, some of which are yet to be surpassed by any Nigerian singer or entertainer. For instance, ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐˜† ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฒ is the first Nigerian to have received a Grammy nomination.

He has also been recognized severally both within and outside his home country for his contribution to the world of music, including being dubbed as “One of the World’s Great Band Leaders” by The New York Times; he was inducted into the Afropop and Hard Rock Cafe Hall of Fame. Dubbed ‘The Chairman,’ the Afropop legend, to date, is considered one of Africa’s most influential artists and West Africa’s number one juju king.

The veteran music star was welcomed into the world as Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye on the 22nd day of September 1946, in Osogbo, Osun State but originally hails from Ondo State. He was born to a mother who was a trader and a father who was a church organist. His parents both hail from royal families, with his maternal grandfather being a King in Akure in Ondo State.

At the age of 8, ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐˜† ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฒ lost his father, Samuel Adeniyi Adegeye, to death. As such, he was left with his mother, Princess Maria Adegeye, who raised him. His mother, who died in 2010 at the age of 112, was a major force in molding the man KSA grew up to become. Although the veteran singer has many siblings, with a number of them being strict while growing up and wanting him to act like royalty, other details about them remain unknown.

He attended a grammar school in Ondo but later dropped out after a few years to join the Lagos-based highlife band Federal Rhythm Dandies in 1963 at the age of 17.

๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐˜† ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฒ got his stage name by shortening his real name when the Green Sports band was formed. He adopted the name because he didn’t want his family, who thought he was in Lagos in school, to find out he had started his band. Nevertheless, KSA quickly rose to become the king of Juju music and remained in that position for decades.

๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐˜† ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฒ musical career began in Lagos in 1963 when he joined singer Moses Olaiya’s highlife band called Federal Rhythm Dandies. Seven years later, the singer launched a band called The Green Spots, which he later renamed African Beats and then Golden Mercury. Famed for his classic guitar touches and dancing steps, Adรฉ has embarked on several tours within Africa, Europe, and America.

He released his debut album titled “Juju Music” in 1982 under Island Records, while his second album titled: “Syncro System” was released a year later. The latter earned him his first Grammy Award nomination, while “Odu,” which he released in 1988, earned him his second Grammy Award nomination. As is common with a few Yoruba artists.

He collaborated with notable stars like Stevie Wonder, Bola Abimbola, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, and Manu Dibango. Besides his illustrious musical career, King Sunny Ade has a nightclub, a studio for budding musicians, a performing arts center, and a foundation. He is also a visiting lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. A recipient of the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐˜† ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฒ was rewarded for his immense contribution to the world industry at the International Reggae and World Music Awards in 2008.

He was inducted into the Afropop Hall of Fame at the Brooklyn African Festival in the U.S. in July 2009. His music has been featured in a handful of Hollywood movies. In 1983, his song played in the film “Breathless” and the 1986 comedy series “One More Saturday Night.” He was appointed a ‘change’ ambassador in March 2017 by Nigerian minister Lai Mohammed.

The singer at present has over 100 songs to his name and about 20 albums. All of his songs are hits as each sold nothing below 150,000 copies, He has shared stages with modern music acts that include Wizkid, Asa, D’banj, and TuFace. At his current age of 76, KSA, who has composed about 3,000 songs, does not see himself retiring from music but intends to sing till he dies.

The Singer Has 7 Wives and Over 15 Children. Also, at that time, the music legend made it known that he cherishes education, and since he could not get a University education, he works hard towards making sure that his children get it. In this regard, he said none of his daughters will ever get married without obtaining a university degree. ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐˜† ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฒ is also a grandfather.
