HISTORY LESSON

On July 4th, 1776, the thirteen American colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, which was mainly written by Thomas Jefferson. This important document announced that the colonies were breaking away from British rule and forming a new nation based on the principles of freedom, equality, and the pursuit of happiness.

The Declaration, approved by the Second Continental Congress, listed the colonies' complaints against King George III of Britain and declared their right to govern themselves. Key figures like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington played vital roles in this effort. Their leadership and vision were essential for gaining independence.

The struggle for freedom continued through the Revolutionary War, which ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. This treaty had Britain officially recognizing American independence, marking the official start of the United States of America.
